75 Years Mountain Resuce Tyrol – a review about decades of saving lives

This year, the Tyrolean Mountain Rescue Service is celebrating its 75th anniversary as an independent association. What began as a simple idea – to help people in the mountains – has developed over the decades into one of the largest and most important rescue organizations in Austria.

The first alpine rescue unit was founded in Tyrol back in 1898. However, it was not until 13.01.1950 that the Tyrolean Mountain Rescue Service officially became an independent association. Since then, the organization has developed continuously – from the first rescue attempts with simple resources to ultra-modern technologies such as helicopters and air rescue.

Today, Mountain Rescue Tyrol has around 3590 active mountain rescuers, including 302 women, who carried out 3469 missions in 2024. Particularly remarkable: almost half of all mountain accidents in Austria occur in Tyrol. This not only underlines the importance of Mountain Rescue Tyrol, but also the high level of responsibility that the organization assumes. Despite the ever-increasing demands, the spirit of commitment and dedication of the rescuers remains as strong as ever.

Technical development and the continuous improvement of equipment have enabled Mountain Resuce Tyrol to save lives even under extreme conditions.

However, the Tyrolean Mountain Rescue Service could not achieve this without the tireless efforts of thousands of mountain rescuers who volunteer their time to ensure the safety of people in the Alps. Their extraordinary contribution ensures that countless people in emergency situations are rescued and brought back home safely.

We would like to thank all the rescuers who have contributed with dedication and courage over the last 75 years to saving lives and making Mountain Rescue Tyrol what it is today.

To the next 75 years of courage, commitment and saving lives!️
